What is it?

Cryotherapy is a highly effective three minute treatment that involves the use of subzero temperatures to help heal a number of medical conditions. Liquid nitrogen and cold air are used to achieve -200°F to -300°F (-129°C and -184°C) .

Why we love it?

  • Improves mood: Do you often find yourself feeling overworked and overwhelmed? Good news, cryotherapy has been known to help improve mood and reduce stress. For example, a study published in the journal Cryobiology found that cryotherapy improved mood and reduced stress in individuals (DOI: 10.1016/j.cryobiol.2013.03.001).

  • Boosts the immune system: Over the last couple of years we have all been looking for ways to avoid getting sick. Did you know that cryotherapy has been shown to boost the immune system. For example, a study published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity found that cryotherapy increased the production of immune cells in individuals (DOI: 10.1016/j.bbi.2013.05.014).

  • Enhances physical performance: Wether you’re an athlete on the field or in the work force, we all want to operate at peak performance. Cryotherapy has been shown to enhance physical performance. For example, a study published in the journal Physiology & Behavior found that cryotherapy improved physical performance in athletes (DOI: 10.1016/j.physbeh.2013.02.008).

What to expect at your visit

  • Consultation: Before beginning treatment, you will have a brief consultation with a team member to discuss your medical history and the reason for seeking cryotherapy. You will also be asked to sign a consent form.

  • Preparation: Before entering the cryotherapy chamber, you will be asked to remove any clothing or jewelry that could interfere with the treatment. You will be given a robe, gloves, two pairs of socks, and slippers to wear. Make sure to keep your underwear on.

  • Treatment: During the treatment, you will stand in a cryotherapy chamber. Your head will not be in the machine. The temperature inside the chamber will be between -200°F and -300°F (-129°C and -184°C). The treatment lasts for three minutes.

  • After the treatment: You will be lowered from the platform. The team member will open the door and guide you out of the chamber.  Be sure to watch your step as the nitrogen gas may impede your view of the steps.  You may return back to your normal daily activities after the treatment.
